 Employee Health and Safety

Figure 01: (Haliburton, 2022)

According to current trends, organizations have begun to pay more attention to organizational and management impacts on safety performance, particularly the role of health and safety management. Major disasters have sparked interest in health and safety management, highlighting management's failures to protect their employees' health and safety and, as a result, to comply with occupational health and safety legislation in order to fulfill their obligations as an employer to provide a safe working environment. (Hale and colleagues, 1997).

Occupational safety and health practices are essential in any workplace. Effective implementation of OHS management principles such as emergency, welfare, and working environment may result in increased employee job satisfaction. This is due to the activities instilling a sense of security, comfort, and belonging in employees.

What is Employee Health and Safety?

Employees have a legal right to work in a safe environment. An employer is responsible for making sure that the workplace is free of as many hazards as possible. Some hazards cannot be removed, so all precautions should be taken to minimize the risk of injury.

ü Employee protection entails the following:

ü Safety training that is adequate and ongoing

ü Machines that have been well-maintained and have enough safety precautions

The term "health" refers to a feeling of well-being. It encompasses not only physical but also mental and emotional well-being. Every employer has a responsibility to offer a healthy working environment for his employees. The cost of disability benefits, as well as the replacement of employees who are injured or killed, could be avoided if he pays attention to their health. The organization can improve the mental and physical well-being of its employees by implementing employee safety and health initiatives.

Who is responsible for the health and safety of employees in the workplace?

As an employer, you must know who is responsible for workplace health and safety and what steps you can take to protect the health and safety of your employees, contractors, and others who may be affected by your operations. Employers hold most of the responsibility for workplace health and safety, although no one person is solely accountable. In truth, The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 defines the broad responsibility of everyone from employers and employees to business owners, managers, and more (ex. maintainers of work premises) as preserving health and safety inside the workplace.
